Only a few millimeters thick, the cortical layer contains the neurons and connections that comprise much of the brain’s workforce, but it appears abnormally thin in schizophrenia. Scientists debate whether the thinning marks a worrisome driver of pathology, a harmless byproduct of mental illness, or something else entirely.
